The Italian Greyhound is among the oldest of dog breeds depicted in many different art forms that give insight into the breed's origins. Although not originating in Italy as the name would suggest, the Italian Greyhound dates back over 2000 years in the Mediterranean region of Ancient Egypt. The breed was later adopted by the Italians.
Remains of mummified miniature Greyhounds have been discovered in the tombs of Pharaohs. The little Italian Greyhound has long been welcomed in the royal courts of the Mediterranean area and beyond.
History of the Italian Greyhound
The Italian Greyhound originated over 2000 years ago in the Mediterranean area that has been confirmed in the artifacts and artwork of the region. The Italian nobleman adopted the little Greyhound as their own during the Renaissance; the little Greyhound would be forever known as the Italian Greyhound. As a feature of royal courts, the Italian Greyhound's popularity grew making their way to England by the 17th century and gradually to the Americas.
The Italian Greyhound was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886. After WWI, the Italian Greyhound was near extinction in Great Britain. Breeding stock from the United States was exported to Great Britain to assist in the regeneration of the breed.
The debate continues about whether the Italian Greyhound was bred for hunting small game or to simply be a companion animal. Both are possibly true as the slender Greyhound easily adapts to city or country life with all the grace and tenderness of its taller Greyhound relatives.

Therefore, consistent leash utilization and obedience training is a must for these quick little dogs.
The Italian Greyhound is an elegant and graceful member of the hound group with a lifespan of up to 18 years. There are health issues common to the breed; these health problems can include seizures, hypothyroidism and knee problems. An easily groomed member of the canine family, this dog only needs the occasional rubdown with a damp cloth.
